Mary Curran is an artist living and working in Southern Maine.

“My work is driven by a deep reverence for the natural world, where observation and imagination intersect. Through multiple media, I am both a witness to and a seeker within the imagery I explore, attuned to the subtle connections between what we see with our eyes and what our spirit perceives. I am fascinated by the thin veil between what is 'real' and what is believed—how cultural myths and personal stories give shape to our understanding of the animal world, and how these beliefs transcend time and place, many becoming shared symbols and communal tales. Through my work, I seek to uncover the layers of meaning ascribed to the natural world, inviting viewers to see nature not just as it is, but as something imbued with consciousness, mystery, and otherworldly significance.

For 40 years, I was deeply invested in art making as a public school art educator. Understanding that the teaching of art reciprocally informs the making of it, I quietly maintained a studio practice and sold to private collectors. I am now deepening that practice and pursuing a wider audience.”
